Sleep Dentistry

What is Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder in which the airway becomes partially or completely blocked during sleep, leading to interrupted breathing and poor sleep quality.

Causes

OSA can result from several factors, including:

  • Relaxation of soft tissues in the throat, such as the tongue, tonsils, or uvula, which block the airway
  • Excess weight, obesity, or a large neck circumference
  • Anatomical differences, such as a small airway or narrow jaw

Symptoms

Common signs of OSA include:

  • Loud snoring
  • Frequent awakenings during the night
  • Daytime fatigue or drowsiness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Morning headaches
  • Irritability or mood changes

Diagnosis

OSA is diagnosed through:

Sleep study (polysomnography):

Monitors breathing, oxygen levels, and sleep patterns

Physical exam:

Evaluates airway anatomy and identifies risk factors

Treatment Options

Treatment for OSA depends on severity and individual needs:

  • Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP): A machine that delivers pressurized air through a mask to keep the airway open
  • Oral appliance: A custom-made device that moves the jaw forward to prevent airway blockage
  • Lifestyle changes: Weight management, quitting smoking, and reducing alcohol consumption
  • Surgery: In severe cases, procedures may be performed to open the airway

Potential Complications

If left untreated, OSA can increase the risk of:

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Cognitive impairment
