Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars located at the very back of your mouth. They usually appear in your late teens or early twenties. Sometimes, these teeth may become impacted, meaning they fail to erupt properly due to limited space in the jaw or their angle of entry. The most common type of impacted wisdom tooth is “mesial,” where the tooth angles forward toward the front of the mouth.

Why Removal May Be Necessary

Impacted wisdom teeth can cause a variety of issues if left untreated:

  • Gum tenderness and swelling
  • Severe pain
  • Difficulty cleaning the area, leading to tooth decay or infections
  • Increased risk of gum disease

We will use a panoramic X-ray to assess your wisdom teeth and determine whether removal is necessary. If extraction is recommended, it is often best to have the procedure sooner rather than later.

Why Timing Matters

Wisdom teeth are typically removed in the late teens or early twenties because:

  • The roots are not fully formed, making extraction easier
  • The surrounding bone is less dense, which reduces recovery time

Early removal generally results in a smoother procedure and a faster, more comfortable healing process.

The Extraction Procedure

Anesthesia & Sedation: We will numb the area with a local anesthetic. Additional sedation can be used for nervous patients.

Accessing the Tooth: If the tooth is impacted beneath the gums or embedded in the jawbone, We may need to remove a portion of the covering bone.

Sectioning the Tooth: To minimize bone removal, the tooth is often divided into smaller pieces, allowing it to be extracted through a smaller opening.

Recovery & Healing

Healing time depends on the complexity of the extraction. We will provide instructions to ensure a smooth, comfortable recovery, including guidance on:

  • Managing swelling and discomfort
  • Eating soft foods during initial recovery
  • Maintaining oral hygiene while protecting the extraction site

Following our instructions closely will help ensure the best possible outcome.
