Sedation

Millions of Americans suffer from chronic facial and neck pain as well as recurring headaches. In some cases, this pain is due to Temporomandibular Disorder, or TMD.

Your temporomandibular joints (TMJ) connect your lower jawbone to your skull. These joints get a lot of use throughout the day as you speak, chew, swallow, and yawn. Pain in and around these joints can be unpleasant and may even restrict movement.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry helps patients who experience dental anxiety receive the care they need in a safe, calm, and comfortable way. By using carefully monitored sedation methods, your doctor can perform a variety of treatments while you stay relaxed throughout your visit.

Benefits of sedation dentistry include:

  • Feeling less fear or anxiety during treatment
  • Greater comfort throughout your procedure
  • A smoother, more relaxing overall dental experience

Many patients who have tried sedation dentistry describe it as simple, stress-free, and one of the best ways to make dental care more comfortable and approachable.
Benefits of sedation dentistry include:

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation, also known as anxiolysis, is a light form of sedation dentistry that helps patients feel calm and at ease during treatment. It’s ideal for those with mild anxiety, longer appointments, or more complex procedures.

With this mild sedation, you’ll remain awake and able to breathe on your own, but you’ll feel deeply relaxed and less aware of the sights and sounds around you. Most patients recover from oral sedation within a few hours after the procedure and often describe the experience as peaceful and stress-free.

Inhaled Sedation

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is one of the most widely used and trusted methods for easing mild to moderate dental anxiety. Delivered through a small mask placed over your nose, nitrous oxide helps you feel calm, comfortable, and more at ease during treatment. It can also raise your pain threshold and make your appointment seem to pass more quickly.

Once your procedure is complete, you’ll breathe regular oxygen for a few minutes, and the effects of the nitrous oxide will wear off almost immediately—allowing you to return to your normal activities right away.

Understanding your options for managing anxiety and discomfort can make all the difference in your dental experience. Contact our team today to schedule a consultation, learn more about sedation dentistry, and find the method that’s right for you.

IV Conscious Sedation

IV conscious sedation provides a deeper level of relaxation, making it ideal for patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety or those undergoing longer, more complex procedures. The medication is delivered intravenously, giving our doctors precise control over your sedation for maximum comfort and safety throughout your treatment.

While under IV sedation, you’ll be in a deeply relaxed state—able to respond to verbal cues but generally unaware of the procedure. Many patients describe the experience as peaceful, often with little or no memory of their appointment afterward.

Your vital signs are closely monitored throughout the procedure, and most patients recover within a few hours. IV conscious sedation allows us to perform more extensive dental work efficiently, all while keeping your comfort, confidence, and safety a top priority.
