Root Canal Therapy

In the past, a tooth with a diseased nerve often had to be removed. Today, root canal therapy allows us to save the tooth while relieving pain and restoring function. Typically completed in one to three visits, this procedure protects your smile and preserves your natural teeth.

What is the purpose of a root canal?

The nerve of a tooth is only sensory—it helps you feel hot and cold, but is not essential for daily tooth function. When a tooth is cracked or has a deep cavity, bacteria can invade the pulp tissue and cause infection. Left untreated, this infection can form an abscess, cause pain, and even affect your jawbone and overall health. Root canal therapy removes the infected tissue, preventing further damage and saving the tooth.

What are the signs that a root canal is needed?

Not all teeth that require a root canal are painful. Common indicators include:

  • Severe toothache
  • Pain when chewing or applying pressure
  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Dark discoloration of the tooth
  • Swelling or tenderness in the surrounding gums

If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your dentist promptly to prevent further complications.

What happens during a root canal?

Root canal treatment typically takes one to three visits. We will:

  1. Remove the affected pulp tissue
  2. Clean and seal the inside of the tooth
  3. Fill the tooth with a dental composite

If your tooth had extensive decay, a crown may be recommended to strengthen and protect it. With proper daily care and regular dental checkups, your restored tooth can last a lifetime.
