Restorative Dentsitry

Traditional vs. Modern Fillings

Dental fillings repair teeth damaged by decay, wear, or injury, helping restore both their appearance and function.

When it comes to choosing a filling, understanding the difference between traditional and modern materials is key.

  • Silver Amalgam: Known for its strength and durability, silver amalgam is often used in back teeth where chewing forces are greatest.
  • Composite Resins (Ceramic/Plastic): Tooth-colored materials that blend seamlessly with your natural teeth. They are commonly used on front teeth for a natural look, but can also be used on back teeth depending on the tooth’s condition.

Choosing the Right Filling

Selecting the right filling depends on your unique dental situation and lifestyle needs.
Several factors influence which type of filling is best for you:

  • Material used
  • Amount of healthy tooth structure remaining
  • Location and chewing load of the tooth
  • Treatment duration and number of visits required

Your dentist will discuss all your options and help you choose the best filling for your needs.Several factors influence which type of filling is best for you:

Direct vs. Indirect Fillings

Understanding the process for placing your filling can help you feel more comfortable during treatment.

  • Direct Fillings: Placed in a single visit directly into a prepared cavity. Options include silver amalgam, composite (resin), glass ionomer, and resin ionomer fillings. The dentist prepares, places, and adjusts the filling in one appointment.
  • Indirect Fillings: Require two or more visits. These include inlays, onlays, and veneers made from gold, base metal alloys, ceramics, or composites. Indirect fillings are used when a tooth has too much damage for a standard filling but doesn’t need a full crown. During the first visit, the tooth is prepared, and a temporary covering is placed while the impression is sent to a lab. At the next appointment, the restoration is fitted, adjusted, and permanently bonded to the tooth.
