Extractions

Sometimes, removing a tooth is necessary to maintain your oral health. Extractions can involve baby teeth, permanent teeth, or wisdom teeth, depending on the situation.

Why a Tooth Might Need to Be Removed

There are several reasons your dentist may recommend an extraction:

  • Baby teeth: Sometimes a baby tooth has misshapen or long roots that prevent it from falling out naturally, making room for the permanent tooth.
  • Severe decay or infection: When a tooth is damaged beyond repair, removing it can protect surrounding teeth and jaw health.
  • Orthodontic treatment: Some teeth may need to be removed to create space for proper alignment.
  • Wisdom teeth issues: Crowding, infection, or impaction may require extraction.

How a Tooth Is Extracted

Teeth are anchored in your jawbone by a ligament inside a socket. During an extraction, your dentist carefully:

  • Expands the socket around the tooth
  • Separates the tooth from the supporting ligament
  • Removes the tooth safely and efficiently

Extractions are usually quick, but your dentist will discuss sedation options if you have concerns about comfort during the procedure.

After the Extraction

Once a tooth is removed, neighboring teeth can shift, which may affect chewing or jaw alignment. To prevent these issues, your dentist may recommend replacing the tooth with a bridge, implant, or other restorative option.
