My smile has changed over the years. Can it be improved?
At Bend Dental Group, we restore beauty and health to smiles by integrating the art of cosmetic dentistry with the science of biomechanics.  This dynamic approach, known as Bioesthetics, ensures proper alignment of the Temporo-mandibular joints (TMJ or jaw joints).  The photos shown here demonstrate the powerful results: a beautiful, natural smile, complimented by relaxed, symmetrical facial muscles, giving a youthful glow overall. (Note: These photos have not been retouched or adjusted in any way.)
Why is the TMJ so important?
TMJ is short for temporo-mandibular joint, also known as the jaw joint.  Just below each ear, the TMJ connects the lower jaw to the temporal bones of the skull.  A thin disc of cartilage beteen the bones acts as a cushions during chewing, talking, and eating.
Take a minute to appreciate the engineering of this joint: it moves in three dimensions, can apply incredible force, and is used constantly throughout the day.  When properly aligned, the teeth fit together comfortably and the face muscles are relaxed.
When one or both joints are out of alignment, however, the body responds with symptoms such as grinding, pain, limited movement, popping sounds, headaches, ear problems, or premature aging.
Extreme cases  can involve pain or vertigo that is truly debilitating.  These symptoms can seems unrelated to dentistry, so correct diagnosis is often delayed.  For these people, bioesthetic treatment of TMJ misalignment is life changing.
The Bioesthetic Approach to Dentistry
Traditional dentistry is reactive in nature - when a problem such as a cracked tooth arises, the dentist fixes that problem without consideration of the whole chewing system.

Bioesthetic dentistry, on the other hand, is proactive in nature.  Precise analysis of the jaw and teeth helps diagnose where the system is breaking down. Treatment is designed to restore harmony to the dental system and prevent further damage.  The results are not only functional, but beautiful as well!
Is Bioesthetic treatment the same as cosmetic treatment?
No, and the difference is crtiical.  Cosmetic dentistry may put a beautiful surface on your teeth, but does not treat the underlying problem that caused the breakdown or wear.  Ongoing problems often follow.
In contrast, Bioesthetic treatment restores ideal alignment and function, preventing further problems,  Symmetry is restored in the face muscles, creating a relaxed and youthful appearance.  Restoring  correct length to the teeth brings the face back into proportion, countering the caved-in look of the lower face that occurs with worn teeth.
